The Grey Eagle Casino Event Centre has become a live music mecca in Calgary, AB.  Featuring not just the “usual” casino circuit of performers, but big ticket, headliners as well. Last night was a stellar example of that, with a lineup consisting of Ashes To New, SIXX:A.M., Papa Roach and Five Finger Death Punch!

A full night of music was kicked off by the Lancaster, PA sextet, From Ashes To New, performing a high-energy 20-minute set. Though I had never heard of them before, I was pleasantly surprised by their performance, and enjoyed their “early Papa Roach” sound. Keep your eye on these guys, I have no doubt you’ll be hearing more about and of them in the future.

The Nikki Sixx project, SIXX:A.M. hit the stage next. With three successful studio albums under their belt, the guys hit the road this year in support of their newest release, Prayers for the Damned, Vol. 1.  Now, I must confess, I’ve always been a James Michael fan. An accomplished songwriter and producer, James is also an amazing frontman, with solid vocals and charisma that is perfect for their hard-rocking sound. SIXX:A.M. consists of some of today’s top musicians (Nikki Sixx – bass, DJ Ashba – guitar, James Michael – vocals), and their material and live performance proves that.

Papa Roach

What can be said about Papa Roach that hasn’t already been said?  They’ve been around for over 20 years, and consistently release hit after hit. Last year, they released their ninth studio album, F.E.A.R, and their set consisted of three tracks from the new album. Frontman Jacoby Shaddix hasn’t let the years slow him down one bit, and hits the stage with energy and showmanship like no other. The man is a crazed animal up there, and we wouldn’t want it any other way! His performance truly is a site to behold! During the song, “Scars”, they showed their versatility, as bassist, Tobin Esperance and drummer, Tony Palemo left the stage, leaving guitarist, Jerry Horton and Shaddix center stage. With acoustic guitar in hand, Horton and Shaddix wowed the crowd with a touching, unplugged version of the hit song. It was quite moving, as the fans, with lighters held high, sang along, giving the room a warm glow.

Five Finger Death Punch

After over three hours of live music, it was time for the headliners to take the stage. Always powerful, always compelling, Five Finger Death Punch filled the room with their signature metal riffs.  Adding to the image last night was face paint, and of course, Ivan’s bullets, hand grenade and skull adorned mic stand, that has been a staple of every FFDP show for years.  Fans know full well, and expect the balls to the wall performance and sound FFDP is known for, and last night they delivered. Opening their set with “Lift Me Up” from their 2013 release, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1. The crowd surfing, which was non-stop during the Papa Roach set, continued in earnest during the headliner’s set. Displaying the class act that Five Finger Death Punch is, as a wheelchair bound fan crowd-surfed his way to the front of the stage – all at the assistance of the crowd, lifting him and his chair high – frontman, Ivan Moody, invited the fan on stage, to enjoy the rest of the show, with a VIP experience.  They performed three tracks from their latest release, Got Your Six, as well as other hits from their extensive catalog of music. Five Finger Death Punch’s performance is just what their band name suggests, hard, pounding and full of energy and conviction!
